Help Others: Be a Man Who Helps Everyone, Giving of Yourself

Man_Helping

Scripture calls men to be more than providers and protectors of their own households. It calls them to reflect the love of Christ by serving others with humility and generosity. Helping others is not just an act of kindness—it is an act of worship, showing the world the selfless love of God. To be a man of God means giving of yourself, putting the needs of others before your own, and finding joy in lifting others up.

Let's explore how the Bible teaches us to help others and how this selflessness reflects the character of Christ.

1. Helping Others as an Act of Worship

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40, ESV)

When we help others, we are ultimately serving Christ. Jesus emphasized this truth in His teaching about the sheep and the goats, showing that acts of service—feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick—are done for Him. Helping others becomes a form of worship, an outward expression of our inward devotion to God.

The Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37 illustrates this beautifully. Despite cultural barriers, the Samaritan went out of his way to help a man in need, demonstrating compassion and sacrifice. His actions remind us that helping others often requires stepping out of our comfort zones.

Charles Spurgeon reflects on this principle: "If you want to give a really great and lasting gift, give yourself. The greatest gift we can give is a heart fully surrendered to God, poured out for others."

  • Charles Spurgeon (1834–1892), known as the "Prince of Preachers," often spoke of the joy and necessity of serving others as an act of devotion to God. His sermons and writings inspire believers to live lives of generosity and compassion.

Helping others with a heart of worship aligns our lives with God's purposes and brings glory to His name.

2. The Call to Selflessness

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." (Philippians 2:3, ESV)

Selflessness is at the heart of helping others. Paul's exhortation in Philippians 2 challenges us to put aside our own desires and prioritize the needs of those around us. This call to humility reflects the character of Christ, who "emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:7, ESV).

Jesus' entire ministry was marked by selflessness, from healing the sick to washing His disciples' feet. His ultimate act of selflessness—dying on the cross for our sins—serves as the model for how we are to live.

John Piper captures this idea: "Love is the overflow of joy in God that gladly meets the needs of others."

  • John Piper (1946–present) is a pastor and theologian known for his teachings on Christian joy and God's glory. His book Desiring God emphasizes the joy found in living for God and serving others.

When we embrace selflessness, we reflect Christ's love and experience the joy that comes from giving.

3. Helping Others with Generosity

"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7, ESV)

Generosity is a hallmark of a godly man. Scripture calls us to give cheerfully and willingly, recognizing that all we have comes from God. Helping others with open hands and a willing heart is a practical way to demonstrate our trust in God's provision.

The early church exemplified this generosity in Acts 4:34–35, where believers shared their possessions so that "there was not a needy person among them." This radical generosity reflected their unity in Christ and their commitment to helping one another.

John Wesley encouraged this spirit of giving: "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can."

  • John Wesley (1703–1791) was a theologian and founder of the Methodist movement, known for his teachings on practical holiness and generosity. His life exemplified tireless service to others.

Generosity not only meets the needs of others but also strengthens our faith, reminding us that God is our ultimate Provider.

4. Helping Others Builds Community

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2, ESV)

Helping others is essential to building strong, Christ-centered communities. When we bear each other's burdens, we create a culture of mutual support and encouragement, fulfilling the law of love that Jesus commanded.

The early church thrived because of its commitment to helping one another. Acts 2:42–47 describes believers who "had all things in common," breaking bread together and meeting each other's needs. This sense of community not only strengthened their faith but also served as a powerful witness to the world.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer underscores this truth: "We are not simply to bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, but we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself."

  • Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945) was a German pastor and theologian whose writings, such as Life Together, emphasize the transformative power of community and the call to actively help those in need.

Helping others fosters unity and reflects the love of Christ, creating a community that glorifies God and supports one another.

Be A Man Who Is: Living a Life of Service

To be a man of God is to help others selflessly, generously, and with a heart of worship. It is to reflect Christ's love in every action, building a legacy of compassion and service.

A.W. Tozer offers this encouragement: "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal."

  • A.W. Tozer (1897–1963) was a pastor and theologian whose writings, like The Pursuit of God, inspire believers to live lives devoted to God and others.

Let us commit to being men who help everyone, giving of ourselves with joy and humility. In doing so, we not only meet the needs of others but also glorify God and grow in His likeness. Together, we can make a lasting impact, one act of service at a time.
